Lash Artist Tips: Exercising Your Eyes
Recently I went to the doctor to have my eyes checked and learned I have astigmatism in both eyes. Before I started feeling defeated, I shared my results to a few groups I manage on Facebook and learned it's not as uncommon as I assumed to have astigmatism in both eyes. In fact, there are many successful lash artists with various eye conditions and it hasn't stopped their flow.
One artist gave me some great tips that I want to share with you. She said that she needed contacts at one point and after implementing these practices, she no longer needed contact lenses. So I'm going to try them and I hope they help you as well. Keep in mind, I am not a doctor so it's suggested you consult with your doctor to make sure this is safe for your individual needs.
"We tend to forget that the eye houses muscles (6 to be exact) that need rest and relaxation just like any other muscle that has gone through a rigorous workout. So the first then is to find periods of rest for your eyes. I started scheduling 20 Minute breaks between appointments so that I could rest my eyes. I meditate, listen to calming music, but stay away from screens and limit my eye movement.
Also when we focus on lashing a client’s lashes we tend to focus in on what’s up close to us. However, the eye has muscle to go through a range of motions and if all of these are not exercised then those muscles will become weakened over time. Here’s some exercises for your eyes to ensure you are working out every muscle in your eye."
EYE EXERCISES
- Since you are mainly focusing on up close, focus on an object in the distance. Do this for ten seconds and 10 reps
- Now look up and return to “eye level” normal gaze. Do each rep for 10 seconds and do 10 reps.
- Now look down and return to eye level gaze. Do each rep for 10 seconds and do 10 reps.
- Now look to your right for each rep for 10 seconds. Return to eye level. Do 10 reps.
- Now look to your right for each rep for 10 seconds and return to normal eye level. Do 10 reps.
This is a set. You can do up to 3 sets of these reps. But make sure you are not moving your head. The only thing that should be moving are your eyes. I hope this helps. Let me know what you think.
